Let us all be the village

I agree the media’s coverage of the Allan Schoenborn triple-murder trial has been too graphic and sensational.
I saw the shock on my nine-year-old’s face when he realized what actually had happened.
He heard it all on the radio at 30-minute intervals while trying to listen to a Vancouver Canucks’ game and then read the front-page KTW story.
Shame on you.
Schoenborn is a sick man who did a horrible thing. I trust the system to ensure he never walks among us again.
The real story should be how can we stop this from happening again.
As a mom, the Schoenborn children’s final moments tear me up, knowing they had been betrayed by their own father, who was trying to harm them.
As a health-care worker, I see many patients on the edge of sanity, flailing through our system of mental, health and court services, desperately going about their days.
There are limited options for their loved ones to force this person to seek help or to obtain protection from them.
I empathize with women who find themselves in the horrible situation of a failed relationship, left with few resources while supporting children and struggling to protect them from the court’s wishes.
It takes a village to raise a child, so let’s find a way to be the village for our community’s children.
