Re: Last Sunday’s KTW article detailing the land-conservation deal involving ranchland in the Kamloops area (‘Freezing the future’):
The Frolek Cattle Company and the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) are to be congratulated for their partnership, which will protect almost 8,000 acres of threatened grasslands near Kamloops.
This agreement demonstrates an innovative approach to conservation that recognizes the economic and ecological values provided by grassland ecosystems.
It also shows there are options that avoid fragmenting and developing ranchlands into residential areas, roadways and ranchettes.
We all benefit from large areas of intact grasslands.
Grassland landscapes not only offer recreational opportunities, but also provide environmental benefits, such as filtering our water supply and absorbing carbon, thereby contributing to our ongoing battle with climate change.
Furthermore, although grasslands cover a mere 0.8 per cent of B.C., they provide habitat for more than 30 per cent of the province’s species at risk.
This collaboration between the Frolek family, the NCC, the Tula Foundation and the federal government is an inspiring example of how we can work together to conserve grasslands and keep ranches working now and into the future.
For generations, Frolek family members have been exceptional stewards of their land and are leaving a legacy of healthy, natural grasslands.
For this we have much to celebrate.
