Pet-owner discrimination reigns in city

Editor:

Re: The Nov. 6 letter from Pat and Leo Hemmer regarding their inability to buy a downtown condo due to pet restrictions (‘In the end, buyer and seller lose out’):

Unfortunately, pet restrictions aren’t limited to condos in our downtown core.

There are many townhouse complexes in Kamloops that do not allow pets or only allow pets that are under a set size.

These bylaws are enforced by stratas that have had issues with animals in the past, but have taken the situation to the extreme.

Instead of instituting a bylaw that would allow owners to have the pets of their choice — while at the same time ensuring the strata is able to enforce penalties on irresponsible owners — they have brought into effect rules that discriminate against the type of animal that a person can have.

This not only discriminates against the animals, but against owners who have done nothing to deserve such treatment.

Many times, pets are seen as an extension of one’s family and, in a society where people are considered innocent until proven guilty, that courtesy should be given to one’s pets as well.
