An unidentified 24-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday on a Canada-wide warrant by a Kamloops RCMP officer. The man was sitting at a bus stop at Summit and Arrowstone drives, right across the street from the Interior Savings Credit Union branch, which had been robbed shortly before the man’s arrest. As of KTW press deadline, police had no evidence to indicate the man was involved in the robbery.

Kamloops Mounties continue to investigate a daytime bank robbery and the bizarre series of events that followed.

Police were called shortly before 3 p.m. on Tuesday after a man wearing sunglasses and a surgical mask walked into the Interior Savings Credit Union branch on Summit Drive in Sahali and demanded cash.

The suspect fled on foot after getting some cash.

No weapon was used in the robbery.

Ten uniformed Mounties, plainclothes officers, a police helicopter and tracking dog were called in to search for the robber.

As the RCMP scoured the area, a dark purple Ford Edge with two men inside wearing what police describe as “gangster-style clothing” took off from nearby Mounties.

A second search for the truck throughout the city ensued.

Police eventually found the truck abandoned in the 700-block of Grandview Terrace in central Kamloops.

At the same time, a Kamloops man known to police was arrested at a bus stop at Summit and Arrowstone drives, a short walk from the bank.

The 24-year-old man, whom police had not publicly identified as of KTW deadline on Thursday, had a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest for breach of parole.

Mounties are now investigating to determine if the vehicle or the man at the bus stop are related to the bank robbery.

“That’s all being looked into,” RCMP Const. Cheryl Bush said.

“As to why this vehicle fled the area, whether or not it was involved in the robbery, is still under investigation.”

Bush said police have spoken to the owner of the truck and recovered items as part of the investigation.

This is the third similar type of robbery in Kamloops in the last week.

On Sunday night, a downtown video store and a Valleyview gas station were both robbed by a man with a knife within 25 minutes of each other.

Police are also looking at whether the three incidents are linked.

“If they are, the person responsible is on a spree and we will deal with that at the time,” Bush said.

In the meantime, RCMP are asking anyone with information to contact the local detachment at 250-828-3000.
