Celebrate Person’s Day
Updated: October 15, 2009 11:14 AM
With the assistance of West Coast LEAF (Legal Education and Action Fund), TRU Students Union, the Soroptomists and the Kamloops and District Elizabeth Fry Society are organizing Persons Day Breakfast on Oct. 23 at the Plaza Heritage Hotel from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.
The breakfast is in recognition of the 80th anniversary of the Supreme Court of Canada recognizing women as “persons” under the law.
The decision advanced the cause of women’s equality rights and opened the doors to a number of opportunities for women.
Mary Eberts, a constitutional scholar, teacher, legal practitioner and Governor General’s Award winner, will be the guest speaker.
Tickets are $35, $25 for students, and are available through the Kamloops and District Elizabeth Fry Society, 250-374-2119, extension 207 or louise@efrysoc.com.
Proceeds from the event will fund activities of West Coast LEAF in Kamloops. West Coast LEAF’s mission is to achieve equality by changing historic patterns of systemic discrimination against women through B.C.-based equality rights litigation, law reform and public legal education.
West 49 collects coats
West 49 in Aberdeen Mall will be donating coats it collects to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kamloops.
The store is kicking of the seventh year of its Coats for Kids campaign, which began on Oct. 1 and continues to Nov. 11
This year, the chain hopes to collect 12,000 coats nationwide.
It has been estimated one-third of Canada’s homeless population are youth.
On any given night that means close to 65,000 young people in Canada are without a place to call home.
Homeless youth are exposed to significantly more physical abuse, sickness, injury and mental-health problems than their non-homeless peers, with often long term implications for their self-esteem, relationships, and ability to become self-supporting.
