Shane Gottfriedson came close, but was defeated on the final ballot during the Assembly of First Nations election for B.C. regional chief on Thursday in North Vancouver.

The Kamloops Indian Band chief was one of five candidates vying for the position and finished second to Jody Wilson Raybould, a member of the We Wai Kai First Nation and a commissioner with the B.C. Treaty Commission.

After the second ballot, Gottfriedson held a three-vote lead over Raybould.

Stewart Phillip, president of the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs, had 40 votes after the second ballot and was eliminated from the race.

However, Stewart threw his support behind Raybould and she emerged victorious over Gottfriedson on the third and final ballot.

The voting is taking place at the Chief Joe Mathias Centre in North Vancouver.

The AFN B.C. regional chief will represent the concerns and priorities of the 203 First Nations in British Columbia and will act as the AFN's representative in that region. The position has been vacant since the election of National Chief Shawn Atleo, the former regional chief for BC.
