Cash falls on Kamloops

Ottawa was busy on Thursday sprinkling cash around Kamloops for a pair of projects — one for business and another for play.
Kamloops-based iCompass Technologies Inc. received $217,000 to develop software from the federal government, while the Boys and Girls Club of Kamloops got a $12,000 contribution for a new playground on the North Shore.
The funding for iCompass, through National Research Council Canada and its industrial-research assistance program, will go toward developing management software and tools that support companies across North America.
The IT company has developed what is called electronic meeting-management products for the public sector and universities and colleges.
Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo Conservative MP Cathy McLeod said the money is part of her government’s commitment to assist small- and medium-sized businesses.
“It’s supporting the seeds of them [iCompass] doing further development,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Boys and Girls Club of Kamloops received cash for a playground through the federal government’s recreational infrastructure Canada funding.
The total project is expected to cost $25,000.
The $12,000 from Ottawa will be matched with a $10,000 contribution from the City of Kamloops and a couple of other donors.
McLeod said the funding is all about supporting communities during difficult times.
“To have playgrounds and outdoor parks that are healthy and active becomes a really important part of the fabric of the community,” she said.
