he Ministry of Environment has approved an operational

certificate amendment for the Cache Creek Landfill, allowing for the

addition of an annex that will expand the landfill's area of operation

and extend its lifespan by approximately 18 months, Environment

Minister Barry Penner announced today.

Ministry of Environment regional staff have reviewed the annex

proposal in detail, and taken into consideration recommendations made

by a third-party expert review of the operation and environmental

impact of the landfill.

The independent study, conducted by AMEC Earth and Environmental, was

released to the public in June. It did not find any significant

environmental impacts associated with the existing Cache Creek

Landfill, but it did provide a number of recommendations to improve

landfill design, operations and monitoring. Wastech Services Ltd., the

landfill's operator, has agreed to all the recommendations made in

this review.

The Cache Creek Landfill receives about one-third of the waste

disposed of by Metro Vancouver, in addition to waste from the Powell

River and Thompson Nicola regional districts.
