The Kamloops RCMP's serious-crimes section is investigating an early-morning fire at a Sahali condominium complex that killed one person and landed another in hospital.

Emergency crews were called out to the 900-block of Gleneagles Court just after 5:20 a.m. Friday for a report of a fire.

It is believed they arrived to find a man outside the complex, saying a woman was still in a bedroom inside.

Kamloops RCMP Sgt. Scott Wilson said the woman died at the scene.

"When we have the death of a person when we don't know the cause of the fire, it's very normal [for police to investigate]," he said.

Authorities have yet to release the name of the deceased woman, but neighbours in the condo complex told KTW a couple in their 40s lived in the unit in which the blaze erupted.

Wilson said the man, who was taken to hospital with "undetermined injuries," will be interviewed by police.

It remains unclear exactly where he was when the fire began.

"I've heard two things on that," Wilson said.

"He was either in the home or he was outside."

Wilson also said it's uncertain if or when an autopsy might take place.

"That will be the coroner's call — the coroner working with serious crime," he said.

Fire investigators are working alongside police and the coroner's service to determine the cause of the blaze.

Wilson said the serious-crimes section remained at the scene into Friday afternoon. More information is expected to be released later today.
