Possible plea bargain in works for accused in theft ring

A Thompson Rivers University student facing a string of charges in connection with a $3-million theft ring stretching across Western Canada won't be entering pleas just yet.

Cameron McElroy had his matters adjourned to next month during a brief appearance by video in Kamloops provincial court on Friday.

The 19-year-old had been expected to plead guilty, but a few housekeeping issues appear to be keeping that from happening until later.

Prosecutor Chris Balison said the Crown was breaking down the charges against McElroy, a TRU business student, and his alleged partner in crime, 20-year-old Zachary Martin.

Rather than having both men included on one information, their matters are being split up — meaning McElroy and Martin will each deal with their charges on their own.

The Crown has implicated McElroy in 19 separate break-ins, while Martin is facing 24 charges.

Police say the pair was involved in dozens of high-end break-ins in B.C., Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

According to Mounties, they made off with a total of $3 million in jewelry, cigarettes, electronics and cash from a number of local businesses over a nine-month span, beginning last summer.

Both men are also charged in connection with break-ins in other Interior communities, including Merritt, Salmon Arm, 100 Mile House, Kelowna and Penticton.

In addition to the B.C. charges, McElroy and Martin were charged in Winnipeg in February for a separate alleged burglaries.

They were free on bail from Manitoba at the time of their arrests in Kamloops.

Charges are also pending against both men in Regina.

Balison said the Crown is waiting for more information before formally laying those charges.

Police believe the two would cut phone lines and disable security systems during their break-ins.

Following their arrests in June, Kamloops RCMP Sgt. Scott Wilson described the burglaries as "sophisticated" and indicated there is likely a link to organized crime.

At his last court appearance in late July, McElroy's lawyer, Jeremy Jensen, said he was in talks with the Crown about a possible plea bargain for his client.

Martin is expected to plead not guilty and stand trial.

Both men are slated to return to court on Sept. 11.
