Crash closes bridge; driver arrested

A Kamloops man is in custody following a collision early Saturday morning that shut down the Overlanders Bridge for two hours.
RCMP Staff Sgt. Doug Aird said police came across the wreck just before 2 a.m.
"An officer patrolling came upon the crash and noticed a grey GMC Sierra pickup was facing northbound, blocking the two southbound lanes," he said.
Investigators determined the driver of the second vehicle involved — another pickup truck — fled the scene after asking witnesses not to call police.
"It was learned both trucks were northbound when the suspect vehicle did a U-turn on the Overlanders Bridge in front of the other truck, causing the collision," Aird said.
Mounties tracked down the suspect driver and vehicle a few blocks away from the bridge, near West Victoria Street and Mission Flats Road.
Aird said the driver was arrested and taken back to the RCMP's Battle Street detachment, where tests showed he had a blood-alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit.
No one involved in the collision suffered serious injuries, although the GMC Sierra involved did receive "extensive damage," Aird said.
The investigation is ongoing.
