Two Kamloops men facing dozens of charges in connection to a $3-million high-end theft ring remain behind bars and won't know for at least a week whether they will be granted bail.
Cameron McElroy and Zachary Martin, who have been held at Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre since their arrests on June 2, made a brief court appearance by video on Friday morning.
The two men, both 20, were charged on June 12 at the conclusion of an eight-month police investigation involving officers from Kamloops, Winnipeg and Regina.
After the charges were laid, Kamloops RCMP Sgt. Scott Wilson described the crimes as "organized crime" and said there may be a gang link.
Martin is facing two breach charges in addition to 24 separate counts of break-and-enter.
McElroy, a Thompson Rivers University student, has been charged with 19 counts of break-and-enter.
The men were originally charged in connection with a burglary at a clothing store in Salmon Arm, which the Crown has said they are linked to through a series of text messages.
Court heard the text messages discussed the "road trip" to Salmon Arm the night of the burglary and included messages about "a new wardrobe" for McElroy's girlfriend.
A police witness was also called to testify at the bail hearing, detailing the extremes police have gone to in working on the case — including five full-time officers in Kamloops, two detectives in Winnipeg and a number of investigators in Regina.
On top of the Salmon Arm charges, McElroy and Martin are facing additional counts in relation to high-profile burglaries at TRU, Fresh is Best, Chatters Hair Salon and On The Rocks pub, to name a few.
Other B.C. charges stem from incidents in Merritt, 100 Mile House, Kelowna and Penticton.
Court has heard charges are also pending in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
Winnipeg Police arrested the pair in February after they were allegedly caught in the middle of a break-in at a strip mall.
Currie said McElroy and Martin flew from Kelowna to Winnipeg, rented a car, a hotel room and a storage locker, and began a brief crime spree before their arrest.
They were eventually released on bail and returned to B.C.
Mounties have said the pair used an "inter-provincial distribution network" to sell the stolen goods.
In court on Friday, Crown and defence lawyers were attempting to schedule a bail hearing next week.
Prosecutor Iain Currie said the hearing will likely take two hours.
It has been tentatively scheduled for June 26.
