DONALD TRUMP LENDS A HAND IN KAMLOOPS: The story and photo that spurred the donation
Published: October 24, 2008 11:00 AMUpdated: November 01, 2008 7:04 PM
An afternoon lull in activity in the city’s downtown core provides Paul Lyons a quiet respite from his day-to-day routine of life on the street.
Leaning against the closed storefront of the community policing station, Lyons sets aside his crutches.
Hopping on one leg, he assembles his belongings on the pavement and picks up the worn paperback.
Then, page by page, Lyons begins to walk in another man’s shoes.
Well-heeled, with the scent of full-grain leather, the Oxfords Lyons tries on in his mind are those of real-estate magnate Donald Trump, one of the world’s wealthiest men.
Lyons says he snapped up the paperback, Trump: The Art of the Deal, in a “free” bin at the At Second Glance Used Books store.
He notes hearing just days earlier that Trump’s net worth is estimated at more than $50 billion.
Lyons doesn’t appear to mind the intrusion when asked his name. I hold up my camera, showing him a soccer photo taken earlier in the day: “This what they sent me to shoot.”
Then I scroll to his photo: “This is what I want to shoot,”
He smiles and nods: “Yeah, sure.”
The stuffed animals propped up along the sidewalk appear as unlikely boardroom companions peering from behind telling eyes.
Lyons rescued the stuffed trio from a sure demise in a back-alley dumpster two blocks away.
Furry castaways facing the inevitability of a reduced lifespan in the fast-growing arms of a child now sit tall in a place of prominence in yet another person’s life, their station greatly improved.
“Didn’t cost me anything,” Lyons boasts.
Another good deal.
The afternoon light grows dim as he turns the page, retracing his steps into the world of wealth and business.
Lyons stoops to pick up life lessons along the way.
And so, one man’s journey meets another’s.
