Rendezvous stripped of liquor licence

A Kamloops strip club that has been the centre of a number of recent police investigations appears to be no more.

Alongside officials from the B.C. Liquor Control Board, Kamloops Mounties revoked the Rendezvous Hotel’s liquor licence on Monday morning.

But Jeremy Jensen, lawyer for Rendezvous ower Christine Rae, plans to appeal the liquor board’s finding.

RCMP Insp. Yves Lacasse said police have had their eye on the establishment for some time.

“Over the past few months, there have been numerous incidents,” he told reporters outside the West Victoria Street establishment.

“There have been criminal incidents involving the Rendezvous and involving the owner of the Rendezvous.”

Rae appeared in shackles at the Kamloops Law Courts earlier this month for a two-day hearing with the liquor board.

She was convicted in August on a string of drug charges and sentenced to six months in jail.

“A number of our officers testified [at the hearing],” Lacasse said.

Jensen spoke briefly with KTW on Monday, noting he was surprised at how quickly the licence was pulled.

“There was no warning,” he said.

“They came in [Monday morning] and said they were going to be back at 4 [p.m.] to make sure there was no liquor.”

A source close to the Rendezvous hearings told KTW that allegations were raised about the involvement of organized crime in the day-to-day operation of the club, but Lacasse wouldn’t get into details.

“I can’t say specifically about any gang,” he said.

“This was an illegal operation.

“There was a lot of illegal business going on at the Rendezvous.

“In the last few months, we’ve investigated a lot of stolen property complaints at this location and a lot of drug activity.”

The Rendezvous has made headlines in recent months for everything from the police raid of an alleged on-site drug den in May to an August mattress fire reportedly sparked by a smouldering crack pipe.

Jayme Russell, the alleged local leader of the Independent Soldiers gang, was arrested alongside Thomas Crawford — who was then thought to be his second-in-command — in a dramatic takedown outside the bar last year. The two men are free on bail and are expected to stand trial on drug charges in January.

Rae has also created her own share of trouble, having been picked up multiple times for drug possession in the past year.

Based on the volume of cocaine she was found with by cops, the 43-year-old was originally charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking. She later pleaded guilty to simple possession and told court she needed the dope to help balance her home and work lives.

While he issued a warning to other local businesses that might be involved in criminal activity, Lacasse said companies that keep their noses clean have nothing to worry about.

“We don’t want any legitimate business to be going out of business,” he said. “If we spend this amount of time and effort working on these investigations, there’s definitely a need for the police to be involved.”

Lacasse said he has been in contact with municipal government to determine whether any further action is needed on the part of police.

Though the Rendezvous’ liquor licence was revoked, it still has a valid business licence, meaning it can continue to operate without serving alcohol.

But Jense said it will remain closed as he pursues the appeal.
