Eat well and lose weight

The human body can only use a certain amount of calories, proteins, fats, lipids, etc.

The body will store any surplus past a certain nutritional threshold.

This is what causes weight gain, an increasing problem with youngsters.

The lack of physical activity also contributes to gaining weight.

The first step consists of shutting off the television or the computer (or both, in the case of many teens), getting off your chair and walking.

Physical activity generates energy; energy encourages you to do more physical activities.

It’s a happy cycle.

Then comes the most important step, the one that will transform your life for the better: Change your nutrition.

Forget fad diets that take you on roller-coaster rides and only work by painful deprivations.

If the size of your waist troubles you, start by paying attention to the size of your portions.

The Canadian Nutritional Guide will provide you with all the necessary information regarding portions (visit Health Canada’s Internet site at hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/food-guide-aliment/index_e.html).

As of today, start by drinking one extra glass of water.

Reduce the amount of chips and chocolate you eat, while increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables.

Not a big fan of vegetables?

A light vinaigrette dip will make them more attractive.

We also eat too much meat, particularly red meat.

Instead, choose white meats and fish.

At the grocery store, reach for cheese sticks instead of cheese-flavoured snacks.

Move, eat better, reduce your portions without depriving yourself and lose weight.
