He’s got the gift

Dubbed as one of the finest MCs to pick up a mic, Gift of Gab is bringing his innovative lyrical style to the snowy mountains of Sun Peaks Resort.

Born Timothy Parker in Panorama City, Calif., Gab is probably best known for his rapping career with Bay Area hip-hop duo Blackalicious with DJ Chief Xcel.

He is also a member of The Mighty Underdogs with Lateef the Truth Speaker and Headnodic.

Branching out on his own, Gab dropped his second solo album, Escape 2 Mars, earlier this month.

And the album’s a true exhibition of the rapper’s style, packed with rhymes and metaphors and presented with lyrical skill.

Not easily categorized, Gab mixes musical genres, from underground to hip hop and psychedelic funk to electronica.

And there are no stolen beats — unlike what so many other top-40 rappers seem to do.

For this inventiveness, critics have praised Escape 2 Mars as “light-years removed from the weak, phoney hip-hop that dominates the airwaves and dance clubs of the world.”

Tracks like El Gifto Magnifico and Dreamin illustrate his rapping skill, whereas In Las Vegas and Want You Back lean to the funky side.

Guests on the record include Honeycut, Del The Funky Homosapien, vocalist Bart Davenport and underground hip-hop champion Lateef The Truthspeaker.

Overall, the album has a strong electronica vibe with original music from DNAEBEATS and Hednodic.

The vinyl release also features plenty of extras, including an exclusive song unavailable digitally.

Gab’s certainly got the gift: Something to say projected with a fine vocal style and smooth pleasing sounds.

Gift of Gab will hit the slopes at Sun Peaks on Dec. 4 at Club Mackdaddy’s, 3240 Village Way.

Tickets are available at Mackdaddy’s, Oronge Board Shop and Mountain High Pizza.
