The gift of a book has led to an evening devoted to women working to help others in war-torn regions of the world.
Amber Huva explained she got the idea of Saturday’s WOmen for Women International Celebration from a book she got for her birthday about the campaign being run by the group.
She paid some attention to its activities and, when she saw it was planning a fundraising event, contacted some of her friends in Kamloops and arranged for a local activity.
So, at 7 p.m., the doors will open at the Art We Are, above 324 Victoria St., for an eveninG of music by local musicians Perry Tucker and Kate Morgan, a bellydancer and a short film on Women for Women International will be shown.
Huva said the admission will be on a sliding scale between $10 and $20 — “whatever you can afford.”
Roxanne and friends
Meanwhile, at the Ukrainian Hall, 725 York Ave., local musician Roxanne Hall will be back on the stage after a lengthy absence from performing.
Hall said she believes in the cause behind the Clear the Air all-ages benefit dance, which has been organized by Save Kamloops, a group fighting against establishment of a creosote-tie burning facility in the city.
Hall said she took most of the past four years off because music had lost its appeal to her.
“I got tired of doing the bars. I just got tired of the game,” she said, “but, recently, I’ve been asking myself why I did this and realizing that I want to get back to it.”
Appearing with her will be The Genghis Gandhis and The Well Hungarians.
Tickets, which are $15 each, must be bought in advance and are available at Grinder’s Coffeehouse, The Smorgasbord Deli and Movie Mart.
They can also be purchased by calling 250-376-1550 or 250-579-5061.
Doors open for the dance at 7:30 p.m.
