Ted Campbell went to Korea to teach English.

So did Chris Ryan.

The two met, connected not only through their work but from their love of music and, four years ago, Fuzzcat was born.

The band defies pigeon-holing — it’s

a bit electric, then a bit ska, with some rock and reggae roots, as well — and has been compared to Sublime and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

So it’s obvious their music is beyond one sound.

Campbell said a spring gig at the Pogue Mahone Irish Alehouse went well and he’s glad they’re coming back for another show on Saturday, Oct. 3.

It’s their only show for a while, since they’re gearing up for a winter tour of ski resorts.

Becoming a part-time band member —he continues to teach English-as-a-second-language in his day job — wasn’t something Campbell envisioned.

“I just played for fun,” he said.

“I’ve been playing since high school but I was never interested in it like it has become.”

In addition to Campbell and Ryan, Fuzzcat includes Dave Wise on bass and Jeff Carter — who was born in Kamloops before moving to Vancouver Island — on drums.

The night will have an Oktoberfest theme, Campbell said, with a free beer included with the $15 tickets.

Opening act is rock/indie alternative band The DGB.
