Can't stop the funk

It’s been a busy three years for Souls in Rhythm.
The Alberta-based eclectic band — think funk and soul shaken up with some R&BH, blues and rock — released their first album, Can’t Fake the Funk, in 2006, won a $100,000 prize in a songwriting competition, recorded Funklore and opened for Colin James.
The band — Scott Henderson on keyboard and vocals, Caleb Roddick on bass, Spencer Cheyne on drums, Craig Newnes on guitar and Alex Hughes on background vocals — also was chosen to perform last September at the CP Spirit Train Event to support the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, and was part of the opening ceremonies for last year’s Alberta Summer Games.
Earlier this year, one of their songs — So I Can Live With Myself — was included in a compilation CD of new Canadian talent that was distributed through Big Rock Brewery. And that competition was stiff, too — almost 200 acts applied and only 15 were chosen.
And now, the group is heading west for a four-date tour of the B.C. Interior, including a gig on July 15 at the Leisure Loft, 255 Victoria St.
Tickets are $10, available at the door.
