Arts briefs: Kamloops gets the real deal

Punk-ska-reggae band The Real Deal performs at the Pogue Mahone, 843 Desmond St., on Saturday. The show starts at 9 p.m.

The Montreal band has performed with Ill Scarlett, Protest the Hero and Bigwig, among others, and took part in Ska Fest and the Warped Tour. They’re touring to promote their new recording, Fun. Three days later, Rude City Rio brings its Western Canadian tour to the Pogue. Tickets are $5 at the door for each show.

• Impressive Impressions

Outdoor Impressions, works by Kamloops artist Agnete Newman, is on display at The Cube at the Kamloops Art Gallery until July 26.

The exhibition features landscapes from the B.C. Interior and ocean views from the coast.

Newman works in the impressionists’ style, painting her works outdoors to incorporate natural light.

• A leisure time

Leisure Suite brings its jazz funk neo-soul latin fusion to the Kamloops Convention Centre on Saturday. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.,; the show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $29, which includes a plate of appetizers. For tickets, e-mail cathimarshall2003@yahoo.ca or call 250-376-5532.

• They’re the bomb

Bombshella brings back the classic rock of the 1980s on Saturday at the Westsyder Pub, 3369 Westsyde Rd.

Lamb and Liabilities

James Lamb and the Liabilities perform at Art We Are, 322 Victoria St., on Saturday.

Lamb is touring with Aaron Joyce on lap-steel, Richard St. Onge on cello and Sara Ciantar on accordion, keys and vocals.

The show is at 8 p.m. Admission is $8.

• Train night

The Kamloops HeritageModel Railway Club is introducing Sunday night train movies at the Thompson Hotel and Conference Centre. The first showing, on Sunday, includes Stea in Western Canada, featuring CPR 2816, Kettle Valley6 3716 and Kamloops heritage 2141 trains.

The show starts at 7 p.m.

• Art camps starting

The Kamloops Art Gallery’s summer art camps begin on Monday and continue to Aug. 28.

Camps for children ages four to six are from 10 a.m. to noon; for children ages seven to 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Thompson Rivers University fine-arts graduates Lydia McAndrew and Katrina Fraser will be leading the classes, which will work with a theme each week.

The program culminates in a display at the gallery on Sept. 3 and Sept. 4.

Weekly cost for the junior camp is $50 for KAG members and $63 for non-members; for the senior camp, $125 for members and $156 for non-members.

Lunchtime supervision is provided, but students must provide their own lunches.

• Skateboard park going online

The Kamloops skateboard park at McArthur Island has attracted at least one fan who wants to feature it online.

A new resident, who moved to the city from Edmonton and who goes by the name Ravnsk8, is so enamoured with the park he’s made a video to promote it at the website skateboard.com.

Ravnsk8 said he hopes to have it uploaded sometime this week.
