If you love a good show, I think you should go to Western Canada Theatre’s production of Seussical.
The theme of this year’s family presentation is “any thing’s possible,” and the local theatre company has proven that with the musical based on 14 works by Dr. Seuss.
Assistant director Amy Baskin warned me a couple of weeks ago the show would not be the extravaganza of set and props that Disney’s Beauty and the Beast was last year, but the current cast makes up all the difference.
Kirk Smith plays the Cat in the Hat (and the Grinch), who is the host of a this captivating and wildly fun story-come-to-life, which features Seuss characters like the Whos, Schmitz, Horton, Gertrude and, of course, Jojo, played by local 13-year-old actress Erica Clow, who, I might add, is a complete natural on stage.
Their costumes are modest and the props, practically cardboard cutouts, but the spirit of this seasonal production couldn’t be matched by even the most elaborate set.
A significant multi-media component, however, is fun and presents images from Seuss’ imaginary worlds full of the fantastical.
Almost completely presented in song, it’s difficult to avoid humming the catchy tunes — which were performed live — and mouthing along to the sing-a-longs based on some of your favourite Seuss stories.
In fact, during intermission, one man sang his way out of the theatre into the lobby to wait for the second act.
The voices of the cast, though, were incomparable.
Everyone I spoke to agreed Horton, played by Hal Kerbes, had an amazing voice. I was also impressed with the variety of singing styles and tones, which made for a delightful and eclectic soundtrack.
And, although she wasn’t the best singer on stage, Lisa Waines, who played Gertrude, was a crowd favourite, putting on a quirky and cute performance.
Mayzie, played by Erin McGrath, however, had the entire audience, both young and old, captivated by her saucy and silly antics.
Now, if you have a hunch you want to see Seussical, you should follow your nose and then your toes to the Sagebrush Theatre, where it runs nightly until Dec. 6.
