Family reunion for fans

Amanda Wilkinson was only 16 when she sang the hit song 26 Cents on her band’s debut album 10 years ago.

And her brother, who makes up a third of The Wilkinsons, along with Amanda and dad Steve, was just 14.

Now, Amanda said, Tyler has grey hair, but that isn’t the only sign of maturity the Canadian trio shows on its greatest hits compilation, released this week.

The Wilkinsons Greatest Hits . . . And Then Some, features all rerecorded favourites and five new songs, and took longer than any other project they’d done to get just right.

“We tried to stay really, really true to the songs and more or less just tried to reflect the maturity that we’ve grown with,” said Amanda.

As for the five new songs, she said the band already had four of them in the pocket, but her dad wrote one during the recording process.

The process was nostalgic for the family that recently moved back to Ontario from Nashville.

Getting back to their roots both personally and professionally, Amanda said being home has been incredibly inspiring.

In fact, as soon as they got north of the 49th last year, The Wilkinsons sat down and penned Home, an album that has been acclaimed by critics as their most creative.

Coming home was just a clean slate, said Amanda, like a breath of fresh air, and it gave the group the energy it needed to come out of its Nashville funk.

“When you’re in Nashville and your business is being on the road, when you come home you’re right smack-dab in the middle of the music business still,” she said.

“There’s no escape from it and it can be draining.”

Luckily, home also turned out to be the place to put the heart back into the group’s music and Home produced five singles, including Six Pack and Fast Car.

After 10 years, however, the band will spend this next year thanking its fans for their support.

The greatest hits compilation is a part of that celebration and the band is touring to make it a real party.

Next year, though, Amanda said she and her brother hope to start focussing more on their solo careers.

Amanda’s self-titled debut was released in 2005 and she’s looking forward to more work on her own.

Her brother is also the frontman for the rock band Motion Picture Ending.

Still, that doesn’t mean there’s trouble on the home front and the family plans to stick together as a band as long as there’s something to sing about.

“If there is something creative to say that I can’t say as Amanda Wilkinson, but the three of us could say together, we’re going to do an album because it’s a huge part of who we are,” Amanda said.

“It’s almost like another formed limb, no matter where we go, we’re still going to be doing this.”

The Wilkinsons will be in Kamloops at the Sagebrush Theatre on Oct. 19.

Tickets are available at Kamloops Live! Box Office, 1025 Lorne St., or by calling 250-374-5483.
