The Sicamous Eagles are flying high after battering the Grand Forks Border Bruins 3-2 and rubbing out the Castlegar Rebels 5-3 in weekend away action.
Friday night, the host Border Bruins started out strong, as did the Eagles, in the first frame. But it was the Bruins’ who would be first on the board at 6:35. And at 2:16 the Bruins did it again, finding the back of Eagle Chris Kingdon’s net. Derek Huisman, however was able to respond before the period’s end, putting Sicamous on the board with help from Kenneth Mckay and J.S. Lavarack.
The Eagles dominated second period shooting (13 to four), but were unable to get by Bruins’ goalie Shane Mainprize. The Bruins had the same misfortune with Kingdon, with neither team scoring in the second frame.
As the clock wore on in the third period, Sicamous only got stronger, dominating again in shooting (19 to 10) and this time scoring twice, courtesy of Aaron Buat and Nolan Zarazun, with assists by Neil Rooney, Luke Richardson and Dylan Smith.
Kingdon received second star honours for stopping 22 out of 24 goals in the contest.
On Saturday, Oct. 11 in Castlegar, Sicamous was the first on the board with a goal from Smith, assisted by Joshua Collins. The Rebels responded with a power-play goal at 11:08. The period ended, however, with a 2-1 lead for Sicamous thanks to an Ivan Hartling goal, assisted by Luke Ramoush and Scott Fellnermayr.
A hard-fought second frame went by with only one goal going to Castlegar.
The Eagles regained the lead in the third period with a goal from Curtis Summerfelt, assisted by Ty Street. Luke Richardson soon followed suit with a fourth goal from the Eagles, aided by Summerfelt.
At 1:38 the Rebels were able to get a third goal past Eagles netminder Danny Minichiello, but a goal at :18 from Ramoush shut the Rebels down for the night.
The game’s second star honours went to Summerfelt.
Sicamous continues to hold the the top spot in the KIJHL Okanagan Division with 17 points, followed by the Chase Chiefs at 14.
