Run for politics a family affair

Heidi DeWitt takes comfort in knowing she won’t be the only one in her family making their first step into municipal politics.

The newly elected Sicamous councillor says she’ll likely be in regular contact with cousin Patricia Checchini (nee DeWitt), who was elected to council in Fruitvale, B.C.

“I’ve been in contact with my cousin and we’re pretty excited,” said DeWitt. “I’ll have that as a sounding board. Her district is different from ours, but it will be a learning curve for both of us.”

Checchini wasn’t the only other DeWitt running in this municipal election. MaryAnne Arcand (nee DeWitt), with 17 others made a run for council in Prince George. She, however, was unable to secure a seat, coming tenth place in voting results.

This was the first time running for all three, and neither knew of the other’s plans until after their campaigns had begun.

“It was kind of surprising,” said DeWitt. “My uncle, actually came to town to visit my mom and that’s when I found out they were running.”

Though new to politics, DeWitt expects her cousin will do well on council in Fruitvale.

“She’s very strong willed,” said DeWitt. “I wish her the best of luck, but I think she’ll do fine.

As for herself, DeWitt says she’s looking forward to the next three years. She describes Sicamous’ new council as a nice mix of newcomers and those whose experience she hopes to learn from.

“Our focuses are all different a little bit, but I think we all love our town, so that’s our common denominator,” said DeWitt.
