Curlin’ rocks

The Wells Grey Curling club has been in operation for about 40 years. The club was formed to give the residents of the Clearwater area a form of recreation for the winter months that would allow residents to participate as a family. The club was very active in the early years. At one time in Clearwater there was three draws per night on the ice. This was in the time before extended time traveling to work, early shifts, and other outside interests became part of the lifestyle in Clearwater. The club operates on a much smaller scale these days.

The Wells Grey Curling Club, one of the many clubs utilizing the facilities of the Sportsplex, hosts their league play, Monday to Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. Junior curlers participate on Monday afternoons at 3:30 p.m. In total the club has approximately 80 members.

League curling starts in early Oct. and continues through the winter until March. The curling club has members of all levels, from the beginner to experienced and from skillful to “just for fun.”

We currently have four teams for Monday night league curling, six for Tuesday, four for Wednesday and six teams curling on Thursday.

League standings to date: Monday league: Settle, 4 points; Rempel, 3; Mattenley, 3; Anderson, 2.

Tuesday league: Hadley, 8; Kreke, 6; Sandback, 4; McNeil, 4; Anderson, 2; Knowles, 0.

Wednesday league: Hindle, 6; Miller, 6; Downs, 2; McNeil, 2.

Thursday league: Desjarlais, 6; Downs, 6; Pendergast, 4; Hamerston, 4; Newel 2; Rempel, 2.

There will be a one evening “FunSpiel”  on Friday Dec. 19. This will be open to anyone who would like to participate. You will be able to enter as a team or individual. Watch this column as more information becomes available.

For those members that may want some extra ice time for practice, there is ice available on Monday and Wednesday evenings.

The club will be hosting an adult curling clinic Dec 7, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Anybody wishing to learn strategy or delivery techniques can pre register by phoning Gwen 674- 3768 or Ron Hadley 674- 3373

This clinic is free, however donations will be accepted towards the Junior Curling program.
