A total of 106 young girls took over the North Thompson Sportsplex the weekend before last for the third annual Girls Hockey Jamboree.
“They came from all over, from McBride, Lillooet, Kamloops, Chase, Merritt and Clearwater,” said Donna McLellan, one of the event’s organizers. “Some play female hockey, a lot play on coed teams. Here they registered as single players and we made the teams up from there.”
“It’s an excellent way for the kids from small towns to play girl hockey, because in some of the towns there’s not enough of them,” McLellan noted.
The girls played in two divisions during the jamboree: juniors, ages seven to nine; and seniors, ages 10 to 14.
Emphasis was on having fun. The agenda included a dinner and disco for the youngsters on the Saturday night.
All participants received a package that contained items such as a “Girl Power” jersey and toque.
This year’s participation total is up from last year’s 78, which in turn was an increase over the first year’s total.
“We have lots of brothers asking when we’re going to organize a boys’ one,” McLellan said.
