Fireweed cooks up Olympic menu
Everyone knows that the athletes at the 2010 Winter Olympics will have to eat but what about all the support staff? Who’s going to feed them?
Fireweed Forestry Services Ltd. will be providing part of the answer. The Clearwater-based company has been asked to cater to about 300 - 600 support staff at two different locations during the games.
“It’s really exciting,” said company spokesperson Nichole Downey. “We get to do something different from what we usually do.”
The job will start just after New Years and continue for three months, she said.
Other details, such as where the locations will be, have to be cleared by security. Possible sites could include Cypress Bowl, Whistler Village, Callaghan Valley or Squamish.
As of last week, company staff members were working on menus and staffing. Downey said she expects that food items will be similar to what they serve at forest fire fighting camps – high in calories for people working long hours in cold weather.
About 50 people will be hired to fulfill the Olympic contract.
Fireweed is well qualified and prepared for the job.
The company has been in business for 21 years, said Downey, working primarily for the Ministry of Forests as caters for fire camps.
This past fire season was the company’s longest and busiest ever, she said. It started with fires as early as May and continued into Oct. Fireweed catered in camps as far north as Liard Hot Spring and south to Kelowna. At the fire season’s peak, Fireweed had about 100 people working and was feeding 1,000 people per day in all of their fire camps.
