Approximately 4000 Canadians die each year by suicide. Five hundred of those deaths are young people between the ages of 15 and 25.

On Sept. 10 events took place across Canada to promote suicide awareness and discussion. World Suicide Prevention Day offers positive messages of hope, focusing on the prevention of suicide and on the commitment of communities to take action.

The impacts of suicide are widespread. They affect millions of Canadians, including the families, friends and communities who lose someone close to them to suicide. Suicidal thoughts and attempts are much more common than suicide deaths. For every one suicide, there are an estimated 20 suicide attempts. It is important that communities address the issue openly. People need to know that asking for help from someone they trust and/or from a health professional is the first step in dealing with suicidal thoughts and behaviour.

If you or someone you care about is currently in crisis, call 1-800-SUICIDE or visit the following websites for resource information: http://www.crisiscentre.bc.ca and http://youthinbc.com/
