Campfire ban gets lifted

Kamloops Fire Centre announced Monday morning (Aug. 30) that campfires are now permitted across the fire centre's jurisdiction due to a decreased risk of wildfires.

Kamloops Fire Centre extends from the northern border of Wells Gray Park, north of Blue River to the U.S. border in the south, and from the Bridge River Glacier west of Goldbridge to the Monashee Mountains east of Lumby.

Safe Home Program presents journal writing workshop

The Safe Home Program and Yellowhead Community Services (YCS) is pleased to present a journal writing workshop for adult women on Wednesday Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A fee of $15 will cover the cost of the workshop with a journal and pen and will include lunch as well. The workshop will take place at YCS, 612 Park Drive, in Clearwater. Please pre-register at YCS with your payment by Sept. 10.

ATV club members hit the trails

For $5 a hand you could buy as many hands as you liked to take part in the annual Poker Ride organized by the Clearwater ATV club. Riders picked up a new card at five different stations throughout the trail ride, each hoping to have the best straight poker hand at the end of the ride. Best hand went to Tim Pennell, $30; second, Les Scarff, $25; and third Dusty MacDonald, $10.

Salmon fishing on the North Thompson and Clearwater Rivers from Aug. 1 to 22 was quite slow this year, according to fishermen. Fisheries and Oceans Canada took nine days off the season due to low expected numbers of returning chinook, which made it even tougher.
