Winter fun with Rec Society
Ski lesson registration this Friday
The North Thompson Recreation Society has been planning for fall and winter activities/ They have sent newsletters to the school students, and would like to let all outdoor enthusiasts know what their upcoming activities are.
They report he Barriere Forks ski trails have survived the summer and it looks like a lot of horseback riding was enjoyed there this year. Some clearing of dead wood is needed and a snowshoe trail will be laid out at one of the Society’s next work bees, which were to be held on Oct. 25th and 29th.
Society member Barb Smith says, “The railings of the warming hut deck will be reinforced, and a new coat of stain will be applied, if warm enough, before all those snowy children gather after ski lessons.”
The club has purchased more skis boots and poles in anticipation of the secondary school program for Grade 8 and 9 students that will start this season.
There may be skis available for rent for adults, and at the trails the group will have “the old three pin bindings and boots” available at no cost for anyone who wishes to try cross country skiing.
Adult lessons will be given if there is enough interest shown. All of the Society’s coaches have taken trainings and are certified.
Smith notes that all those who use the trails need to realize there is considerable cost involved in keeping the trails track set and groomed, and the equipment in good order; as well as keeping the parking lot and road plowed. A donation box will be put in place to help off- set these costs.
Registration for ski lessons for those age four to 14 will take place at the North Thompson Volunteer Centre (NTVIC) at the Barriere Ridge this Friday, Nov. 6, from 2:30 p.m. until 6 p.m.
Children will be able to be fitted, and can take home their skis, boots, and/or poles at that time. Rental for the season is $50 (a bargain if one compares daily rentals at a ski hill).
There will be nine lessons beginning either Saturday Jan. 2, or Sunday, Jan. 3, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Lesson rates vary according to the level of the child.
Some of the experienced skiers will be taking part in races with other clubs and these events are usually held on Saturdays.
Smith says the Society will be continuing the Thursday hikes and Ski and Tea days at the trails and nearby areas.

The Society meets monthly at the NTVIC room in the Ridge. The next meeting will be held on Friday, Nov. 13, at 9:30 a.m.
“We look forward to snow – but not quite yet,” says Smith.
