Facelift for town bridge
Published: July 21, 2008 5:00 AMThe Barriere Town Bridge is getting a facelift.
Victoria has announced a tender to upgrade the bridge to increase safety.
“The upgrade will mean so much to the residents of Barriere,” said Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Kevin Krueger, in a press release. “This new overlay will provide a safe, maintenance-free, running surface for the travelling public and is a great investment for the community.”
The project includes removing the existing deck overlay and replacing it with a new high density overlay. Work will begin on August 6 and is scheduled to be completed on October 31.
There will be some disruption of traffic during the length of the project. Alesha Hayes, of B.C. Government Caucus Communications, says traffic will be limited to alternating single lane during the construction. She says motorists can expect delays of up to 20 minutes.
Hayes said the bridge deck is in an “advanced state of deterioration,” necessitating the lengthy time to complete the work. However, she says when they issue tender documents, they usually plan for a worst-case scenario and the actual construction time may be less.
The work will entail taking up the top layers of the bridge deck and replacing it.
