Dear Editor
Our Remembrance Day ceremony at the schools was enjoyed by all 12 of us on Nov. 10.
A group of Legion Branch and L.A. members, cadets and our Padre, Lois Petty, started at 9 am at the Cache Creek Elementary School.
The students at all the schools were well behaved and everything. We started with O Canada, a prayer by Lois Petty and entertainment by the students. Last Post and a recording of In Flanders Field, and an hour later ended with God Save the Queen.
At 11 we were at Ashcroft Secondary School and again it was O Canada, prayer and speech by Rev. Lois Petty, a drum song by Randy Porter, recitals by students, Last Post, In Flanders Field and God Save Our Queen. The cadets look so sharp when they march in carrying flags and stand at attention. We were very proud of them. Then it was off to meet the chef and his students and enjoy a delicious lunch.
The Legion members then met at the Long Term Care lounge in the hospital. We always enjoy this very much. Tom Knowles talked about some of his many memories of World War II. O Canada, In Flanders Field and Rev. Lois Petty’s prayers for country and fighting troops and the visit ended with God Save Our Queen. Enjoyed by all.
Finally it was off to Ashcroft Elementary School at 2 pm. Again our cadets marched in. We sang O Canada and had a prayer and war memories by Rev. Lois Petty. The different classes sang four songs, one class presented us with poppy cards. Then it was Last Post and In Flanders Field. We were asked not to sing God Save Our Queen. We were all a little shocked as this is part of our ceremonies.
The Queen is still our monarch and until this is changed, I believe we should still honour her. It seems to be a real shame that not only is God being taken out of some of our schools, but now our Queen is not being sung either.
