The court at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre will be filled with basketball action beginning tomorrow as the 2nd Annual Tribal Nations Tournament gets underway.

This year there will be 13 teams, down from 16 teams during the inaugural event, competing in three divisions – Seniors, Intermediate and the new Intermediate Women’s for women under the age of 21.

In the Seniors division, defending champion Seashore Charters is back to defend their crown against the senior men from the Friendship House, Skidegate and Lax

Kw’alaams.

“They are four pretty good teams based on last year, so it should be an exciting division,” said tournament organizer Conrad Lewis.

The defending Intermediate champions from Skidegate are also back this year, looking for the repeat in a division that also includes teams from Kincolith, Lax Kw’alaams and the Friendship

House.

In the Women’s Intermediate division, Kitamaat, which won the Women’s division last year and will be sitting some of the senior players to compete in the new division, will take on teams from Canyon City, the Friendship House, Kincolith and Metlakatla B.C.

The tournament will run until November 7, and Lewis said the goal is to make a tournament that is fun to play in and to watch.

“There is a moderate admission fee, discounted day passes and a discounted weekend pass. We want to make it easy for teams to participate but also for want to make it easy for spectators to take in the action,” he said.
