Rampage pick up two wins in Vanderhoof double-header

The Rupert Rampage made their longest road trip of the season this weekend as they headed to Vanderhoof to take on the Omenica Ice in double-header action on Saturday and Sunday.

Most of the action in the first period took place in front of the Ice goaltender as the Rampage pressured the home team from the start. But the Ice proved up to the task and the two teams found themselves in a scoreless tie after 20-minutes of play.

The second got underway with Omenica still on the powerplay, which the Rampage were able to kill off. While Omenica had their chances in the second frame, it would be Prince Rupert who took firm control of the game with three quick goals. Rob Millar opened the scoring at 14:08, followed by Chris Woodrow less than a minute later at 13:11 and Brett Stava with 10:08 to play, giving the Rampage a 3-0 lead. But the team wasn’t done there as Trent Davis scored with two minutes left on the clock to give Rupert a 4-0 lead going into the third.

The third period saw its fair share of penalties, with the Ice spending a lot of the frame in the penalty box, but it didn’t see any goals as the Rampage picked up the 4-0 victory and Keith Movold got his first shutout of the season, stopping 31 shots.

When the two teams met again on Sunday the Rampage jumped out to an early lead. Colt Stava scored less than 90 seconds into the game, and Rob Millar found the back of the net with 9:38 to play. Then, with 2:08 left in the first, Brett Stava put the Rampage up 3-0 going into the second.

In the second the Ice responded with a goal at 13:59 by Dave Gordin and a goal at 11:37 by Darnell Calfa to pull within one. But Colt scored his second of the game at 10:28, Brett scored his second at 7:47 and Travis Helland found the back of the net at 6:10 to give the Rampage a four goal lead. With just two minutes to play the Ice’s Graham Laursen scored to again narrow the gap. The period also saw a fight between Dan Wright of Rupert and Jeremy Kuharchuk of the Ice.

But that would be as close as the Ice would come as Colt completed the hat-trick and the Rampage won 7-3. Goaltender Dan Lorette stopped 31 shots in the winning effort.

The Rampage travel to Kitimat for a Hallowe’en game, and the following week the Demons make their return to the Jim Ciccone Civic

Centre.
