Thursday marked the first day the H1N1 vaccine was offered in Prince Rupert and hundreds of residents lined up for the immunization shot early this morning, well before the clinics were to start.
With 20 minutes to go before the first vaccine was given at 9:30 a.m. on November 5, people of all ages were lined up all the way around the upper concourse of the Rupert Square Mall, with the line being several people wide in several places.
For those who are unable to make it to the clinic today by the 5:30 p.m. deadline but who still wish to get vaccinated in the first round of immunizations, which are targeting high risk groups that include people under 65 with chronic condition, pregnant women and people who live in remote and isolated settings or communities, the clinic at the Rupert Square Mall will continue tomorrow from 9:30 a.m. to six p.m.
On Thursday Northern Health cancelled a scheduled clinic on Saturday, November 7.
Collins urged people to check the Northern Health website before going to the clinics in case there are any changes, but said there was no need for the public to panic.
Northern Health is also listing clinics at the Prince Rupert Health Unit on November 19 and 26 from 10 a.m. to six p.m. and on November 20 and 27 from 10 a.m. to four p.m., and say they anticipate being able to vaccinate everyone who wants the shot by mid-December based on the supply of vaccine.
“We will get all the vaccine we want and need in due time,” said Collins.
