Boil water advisory in place in Port Ed
Residents of Port Edward are being advised to boil their water in the coming weeks as the district begins tying into the new system of waterlines that was recently installed.
“To do the tie-ins they have to cut into the line, so there is a possibility of contamination,” said chief administrative officer Ron Bedard, adding that the advisory is district wide because of the scope of the work being
done.
“We don’t anticipate any problems, but we want people to be aware that they should boil their water as a precautionary measure.”
Bedard said he expects the advisory to be in place for the next two to three weeks, with the work getting underway on September 23, but said no definitive date has been established as it could take some time because none of the residences are currently tied into the new lines and the new system hasn’t been
activated.
Along with asking residents to boil their water, Bedard said the district is taking additional steps to address any potential contaminants that enter the
system.
“People will also notice an increase in chlorine in the water. We’re going to increase the chlorine because we want to make sure than anything that does get into the line is taken care of, and chlorine is a disinfectant,” he
said.
The 40-year old water lines in Port Edward were replaced this year following several breaks over the past two years, and their replacement was identified as a priority for council.
