Light and Metal on the stage
Tara Friedenberg in bANGER.
A modest crowd turned out to the Lester Centre of the Arts on October 23 for the aptly named Light and Metal, a presentation of Made In B.C. Dance, that showcased two very distinct and unique performances.
The show started with bANGER, a one-woman show starring Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg that blended dance with acting to tell the story of a socially awkward youth who finds solace in heavy metal music. Friedenberg played the role of the young man perfectly to take the audience on a journey that included scenes from home, high school and even a bit of a trip into history as a British general told his side of general Montgomery’s involvement in the Battle of El Alamein. Mixing music with humour, story and dance, the show was an entertaining hour that was well appreciated by those in attendance.
The second show was equally impressive for completely different reasons. Surge, featuring dancers Day Helesic, Amber Funk Barton and Meredith Kalaman, was 45-minutes of non-stop fluid dance. The focus was clearly on the dancers as they danced individually and interactively, and used some large lighting fixtures pointed at the crowd to create an impressive silhouette effect that only highlighted the
movements.
