Last week the Prince Rupert Port Authority released its traffic statistics to the end of September, stats that show some areas are seeing growth while others are seeing a decline.

Traffic at Fairview Terminal was up 32 per cent this September compared to last September, rising from 218,716 tonnes to 288,765 tonnes, and the total traffic handled at the container handling facility so far in 2009 was up an impressive 70.2 per cent compared to the first nine months of 2008, from just over 1.06 million tonnes to 1.81 million

tonnes.

While tonnage at Prince Rupert Grain was down 12.7 per cent this September compared to last September, the overall tonnage handled so far in 2009 is up 46.8 per cent compared to 2008, from 2.70 million tonnes to 3.97 million tonnes. That number is thanks in large part to a 77 per cent increase in the amount of wheat handled, with barley, canola and grain pellets seeing declines of 65.9 per cent, 13.1 per cent and 55.9 per cent

respectively.

Also increasing was the amount of logs being shipped out of the Prince Rupert harbour, up 57.8 per cent from 92,427 tonnes in 2008 to 145,855 tonnes so far in 2009.

And while the tonnage handled at Ridley Terminals was up 137.2 per cent this September, with coal and petroleum coke increasing by 55.7 and 61.9 per cent respectively, overall tonnage so far in 2009 is down from 3.88 million tonnes in 2008 to 3.03 million tonnes so far in 2009, a drop of 21.9 per cent.

Also dropping was the number of cruise ship passengers with the departure of the second weekly ship calling on Prince Rupert. To the end of this September there were 55,097 passengers visiting Prince Rupert compared to 103,630 during the 2008 season. That translates into a drop of 46.83 per cent.
