Since 2004 City Furniture Prince Rupert has been offering the North Coast a wide variety of home furnishings and electronics from the Ocean Centre Mall location on Second Avenue West, but this weekend City Furniture will be celebrating the grand opening of a larger and more customer friendly location at 700 3rd Avenue West.
“This will be the largest furniture store in the Northwest, from here to Prince George. It’s 30,000 square feet of retail space on three different levels. Our last location was 16,000 square feet including the warehouse, but here it’s all retail and the warehouse is in the adjoining space that used to be the pub,” said manager Sonu Sandhu.
“We completely renovated the space and opened up this building more than it has been in the past. In this building we easily opened up another 10,000 square
feet.”
Along with the additional space comes an additional two staff to serve the needs of City Furniture’s customers and the ability to do some things that weren’t possible in the old location.
“One of the highlights will be the biggest appliance section in the northwest with three functional kitchen appliance displays. We’ll also have the biggest mattress selection and the biggest TV display,” said Sonu.
“As we grow bigger there will be more involvement in the community. We’ve always been a part of the community, that has never changed and should progress. But our biggest role is going to be providing customers with the best service and the biggest and best selection of furniture,
appliances and electronics.”
Another reason for the relocation and expansion comes from the current success being seen at Fairview Terminal, as the local City Furniture will serve as somewhat of a distribution point for the other 24 stores in the family-run business.
“We are catering to all City Furniture stores because of the situation with the port. The majority of product can be landed and sorted at this facility,” Sonu said.
The grand opening of the new location will take place this Saturday, and Sonu and the staff are planning a special event for Prince Rupert.
“There’s going to be special hours and a sale that is just for the opening. There will be extra staff and volunteers and family to help with the grand opening, and there will be draws and events for charity as well,” he explained.
The new location was possible thanks in part to Northern Savings Credit Union and the Bank of Nova Scotia, with work being done by Dwayne Davey Drywall, Paul Cope, Ian Walker, Sean Pottle, Richard Wright from the Electrician and Sean O’Brien. And Sonu said a big thanks also goes out to residents of the
city.
“We want to thank Prince Rupert for voting us the best furniture store for the second time, and in the future we hope to do even better.”
