During the September 1 hearing of the Cohen Commission in Prince Rupert, members of the Coast Tsimshian made it clear that they were prepared to take action “in the near future” to shut down the unmonitored recreational fishery on the north coast.
“The two chiefs have spoken and they want to see a shut down of the recreational fishing sector in our territory…We see everybody, the other sector, taking everything out of our territory and we are not allowed to harvest our own even though we are the owners of the land and the territory on which we are standing today,” said Stan Dennis, noting that the last 15 years have been “devastating” for the Tsimshian people and the commercial industry.
