Humbled at apology viewing
Published: June 24, 2008 11:00 PMDear Sir:
I would like to thank the organizers and hosts of the event that took place at Northwest Community College during Prime Minister Harper’s apology to aboriginal people.
I was very moved and honoured to witness this historic event in the company of many respected elders and family members. The anticipation of what was to happen could be felt in the atmosphere. During the apology the emotion of those attending was very strong.
While national aboriginal leaders were responding to the apology, the pride of many First Nations, Aboriginal and Metis people was like a current through the college cafeteria.
Even though tears were shed for those that did not live to hear this long-awaited apology, there was joy in the recognition of the strength and resilience of our cultures.
I applaud the partnership between Kermode Friendship Society and Northwest Community College. It is these examples of collaborative partnering that will build sustainable change in our communities and improve the well being of our population.
Congratulations on a well planned, thoughtful and coordinated response to a significant historical event.
Thank you once again for providing the community and elders with a respectful environment to celebrate this historic event, I was humbled and honoured to witness the dignity and strength of those attending.
Nicole Bingham,
Kitsumkalum, Ganhada
