IT’S OUT with the old and in with the new as plans progress to replace the old welcome sign in Thormhill.
Welcome sign to be replaced
Published: September 30, 2008 11:00 PMAN OLD landmark has come down, and a new structure will soon be in place. Local community members, who participated in the area’s first Leadership BC program, are laying the groundwork to install the first of four “Welcome to Terrace” signs.
The weathered sign in Thornhill heading east on Hwy16 was taken down the morning of Sept. 23 and the group is hoping to put the new sign up in the next couple of weeks.
“We are very grateful to the incredible support we’ve received from so many community groups,” said the group organizer Sarah Zimmerman.
The group has managed to gather $25,664 from in-kind and cash donations from community groups. It is anticipating a $5,000 donation from a local service group, but is still short $10,000 to complete the project.
Leadership B.C. teaches participants the skills needed to become leaders in the community and 13 of them were honoured in a graduation ceremony this June.
The group chose to make new “Welcome to Terrace” signs as their program’s required community project. Group members then worked on an initial design, chose a local sign maker, and determined which materials were needed and priced them out.
