School closures being considered
Editor:
The Road to 2010 will be paved with school closures?
The time has come again for the contemplation of school closures. Unfortunately with this time also comes the time for rumours and half-truths. Which schools will close, which ones will remain open, are not known yet.
Some truths: There has been a district sustainability committee developed to prepare a report to be presented to the board at a special public meeting on January 19, 2010. This committee will be looking at all options in the school district, not just closures. In the meantime, there is not a list naming schools to close that has been made public. It is all purely speculation. After this report comes before the trustees, there will be a six-week consultation process. The final decisions will come after that. No one wants to lose their neighbourhood school. It is not fair to pit communities against each other, but it is already happening.
Our school trustees have been given an impossible task. They have to make decisions that will affect many of us. No matter which way you slice it, in the end, it all boils down to money. School closures are a bigger issue than all of us combined. Much of it has to do with a mean spirited government that says our system gets the highest funding ever. They are the same ones who are putting on a ‘party’ that many of us can’t attend in February, at our expense. I know our trustees have the best of intentions for our district; unfortunately the road to 2010 is paved with them.
