A 13-year-old boy is recovering after being assaulted with one or more weapons by his parents on Sunday.

The boy suffered extensive, but non-life-threatening, injuries and was released from hospital on Tuesday into the custody of the Ministry of Children and Families, Prince George RCMP spokesman Const. Gary Godwin said.

A 44-year-old common-law couple are facing charges of assault with a weapon and aggravated assault in the case, Godwin said.

"As a result of information received, (RCMP) attended the house. This child was in the house and had been viciously beaten," Godwin said. "An instrument or several instruments were involved, but we're not disclosing what it or they are."

A second child was in the home and has also been taken into protective custody by the Ministry of Children and Families.

Both parents appeared in court on Tuesday and were remanded in custody until Nov. 17, Godwin said.

"It's unusual for the court to remand both parents in custody," he said. "These people had not come to our attention before. (But) this had been going on for some time."

The names of the accused have been withheld to protect the identity of the victim.
