Air quality advisory cancelled for now
Updated: August 29, 2009 12:28 PM
An air quality advisory has been cancelled for the city of Prince George, but may be reinstated later today.
The advisory was issued by the Ministry of Environment in collaboration with Northern Health on Friday morning because of high levels of fine particulate matter. These high levels could produce adverse health effects on children, seniors and individuals with heart and lung conditions.
Based on the data, the high levels were mainly due to smoke from forest fires in the province, with some industrial-source contributions. The 24-hour levels of fine particulate are still above the provincial objective, but the hourly levels have gone down to what is deemed a safe value.
There is a possibility of high levels re-occurring later today in the event of a change in wind direction. Should that happen, the air quality advisory would be reissued.
