The City of Prince George has issued a ban on all open burning until further notice.

The ban went into effect at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday and applies to all open burning — including recreational fires in fire pits.

"We've had an increase in fire activity in the last couple days," Prince George Fire Rescue Service deputy chief John Lane said. "We're trying to be proactive and reduce the risk of fire."

Hot, dry, windy conditions have contributed to a number of fires within the city, Lane said.

"We had a slash pile fire in a remote area that was quite difficult to get to. It's out now, but that was quite grueling," Lane said. "And we had a grass fire that built up quite quickly downtown by the Connaught Hotel. Fortunately we were on top of it."

Prince George fire fighters are asking for the public's cooperation with the ban.
