A grudge match between the Prince George Axmen and the Bantam Vikings took place on Saturday to determine who would represent the North in the provincial championships. Prince George scored first against an overconfident Viking defence. Spencer Seimens started the Vikings scoring, Siemens caught a pass through the middle of the P.G. defence then ran 45 yards for the first Viking score. The running game came alive late in the first quarter when Sheldon Conniff scored two rushing touchdowns and Kyle Varley and Ben Rodts ran in two point conversions. Sheldon Conniff also recovered a Varley punt and ran in for a touchdown against a confused PG team that had never seen a play like that before. Landon Brophy scored the last touchdown of the half with a 23-yard reception. After the first score of the game the P.G. team was completely dominated by the defense of the Vikings. Peter Lafleur, Darby Lytle and James Martens all recovered fumbles, two of them forced by Louis Klopper. Torrin Lytle intercepted three passes and Haley Sullivan had one. Middle linebacker Gavin Schlamp shut down the inside running game with some physical play that intimidated the PG runners. Due to injury and illness Kyle Cameron and TJ VanDamme played out of their regular positions, sacrificing for their team to ensure the team victory. The Vikings won 44-16.
The Pee Wee Vikings had two games this week. First on Wednesday night during our league semi final, we had a chance to play under the lights at Massich Place. The boys came out fired up and scored on their first two drives. They won 32-6 against P.G. Green. Players of the game were Dawson Currie for defense and Connor Arnason for offence. Vikings of the game was our offensive line: Chance Harper, Graeme Thiessen, Tyler Stevenson, Tanner Zielke, and Trent Emel. They created holes for our running game as well as some solid pass blocking for our only passing touchdown of the year.
Our second game of the week was the Championship game on Saturday versus P.G. White who we had only beat once all year. The team was excited to play and everyone played a great game, but at the end of the day we lost 21-6. Our defensive player of the game was Tanner Daniels who recovered two fumbles. Viking of the game was Dylan Parent who came back after being hurt a couple of times to take the ball on a couple of key plays. Our Offensive player of the game this week was Hunter Brophy.
The Junior Bantam season ended with a win for the Viking team and a chilly Gatorade bath for Coach Russell Jensen. The JB Vikings went undefeated all season winning all 10 games and out scoring their opponents 526 to 56 in those ten games. The Prince George Minor Football Association championship win awards the team a spot in the Provincial Championship game to be played in Kamloops on November 14. As with the season games, the championship win was a team effort with all 23 athletes contributing in big ways to the team’s success. Fullback Josh Hoffert scored on the first play of the game, with a 45-yard touchdown run. Mckay Jensen, half back, added the team’s second touchdown off a screen pass from quarterback Dillon Siemens. Hoffert ran for two more touchdowns in the second quarter off beautifully executed plays, giving the Vikes a commanding 34-0 lead at the half. On the first drive of the 3rd quarter Jensen ran a hand off 30 yards to the one yard line, where one play later Rookie Lineman Liam Arnason scored his first touchdown of the season with a one yard plunge. Coach James Iannone’s defense led by a dominating defensive line put pressure on the Prince George team on every play, recording lots of sacks and tackles behind the line of scrimmage. The defense, who didn’t allow their opponents a single point in either of their playoff games scored three times in the championship game with defensive end Gerry Ens returning one interception 30 yards for a score and linebacker Blake Kingsley returning two intercepted passes for touchdowns. When the final whistle blew the Vikings had won 54-0. The entire team played team football. Every player put his best efforts on the field and it showed.
