The senior girls volleyball squad at Mount Elizabeth Secondary School is off to a strong start this season.

The club dominated at a zone tournament held on their home turf in Kitimat October 23 and 24. The girls came in second, losing a nail-biter to Smithers A team in the finals (20-25, 26-24, 15-17).

“It could have gone either way,” said coach Michelle Wakita. “The tournament went well and the final game was a pleasure to watch. MESS worked really hard and the bench was enthusiastic and very supportive. We were proud of the way they played.”

MESS tournament results leading up to the exciting final game were as follows: vs. Centennial (25-14, 25-25); vs. Prince Rupert (25-8, 16-25, 15-4); vs. Smithers B team (25-3, 25-6); semi-finals vs. Caledonia (25-14, 25-21).

“The team this year is very strong and we have a lot of depth,” Wakita said.

“MESS definitely has a great chance of winning zone. They are a very talented, hardworking and determined group of young ladies.”

Zone will be held Nov. 21 in Kitimat against the two Prince Rupert clubs - Prince Rupert Secondary and Charles Hays Secondary.
