Markwart’s four-goal outburst powers Demons

The old mantra legend about the “big ice” in Tamitik Arena in Kitimat showed up again Saturday as the Kitimat Ice Demons defeated the visiting Prince Rupert Rampage by a score of 6-4, which was fairly flattering to the visitors because they did not bring their top scorer, Colt Stava, or their A game for this one.
The Ice Demons were too much for the Rampage on this night as they threw the puck about with abandon.
Long passes up the ice contributed to a four goal night for prolific winger, Blaine Markwart who had Keith Movald’s number in net for the Rampage, with four breakaway goals. Terry Whelan picked up assists on all four goals, while speedy d-men Geoff Morgan and Jeff Baker, shared the remaining three helpers.
The win, coupled with a 2-1 win for the Houston Luckies over the Burns Lake Braves, dropped the Braves into second place overall, although they continue to lead the East Division.
It was not a contentious game, with only four minors called on the Demons and thee on the Rampage.
However, Kitimat’s Adam Buick drew an unintended hitting to the head penalty, five minutes and a game, in the dying second of the second period when he two collided with Rampage’s Tom Jackson, at the Prince Rupert line, stunning the man.
On the ensuing power play the Rampage managed only three shots. Getting shots through the crowd in front of the net was a major problem during power plays for both teams.
Hitting was at a premium as both teams concentrated on the long pass breakout, which worked much better for the Demons than the Rampage.
The two teams meet again next week in Prince Rupert and the Rampage will be anxious for a better result in front of their home crowd.
The combination of swine flu and Hallowe’en hurt the crowd, estimated at 500 maximum.
In the intermission the Ice Demons players selected the best-dressed Hallowe’en revelers in the young and adult categories.
