It was another fun and sunny week for Kitimat soccer players who got the chance to train with the Brad Higgs Soccer School.

In all there were 62 kids who spent their weekday mornings from July 20 to 24 training under Brad Higgs, the school director, and two coaches, Carson Drayson and Phil Corless, along with Kitimat head coach Don Pacheco.

Higgs has 33 years of experience playing soccer, has played for the Canadian Olympic team and over 10 years of coaching.

Both himself and the kids had a great time learning the game.

“The kids are just great,” said Higgs, saying that they’re eager, keen learners with a first class attitude.

He emphasized that even though it’s a soccer camp people shouldn’t be put off that it’s something for younger kids.

Seventeen-year-old Michelle Dahler and Megen Grossman both have spent numerous years attending the camp and have yet to be tired of it.

Dahler has been attending the camp for five years and Grossman is in her second year attending the Higgs camp.

They continue to learn, and Grossman said it’s a lot of fun continuing to learn and improve her techniques.

Higgs said it is inspirational to see players like that come back - down in Vancouver its quite a different story.

At about age 15 the kids down there tend to find other interests and drift away from soccer.

While Kitimat’s camp is open to all ages, he usually limits the camps to people up to 14 years old because of that disinterest in the Lower Mainland.

And to cap off the week the kids were divided into a mock “World Cup” style tournament.
